WRP Recognized for Role in Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Program

On May 14, 2015, the Waste Reduction Partners team was recognized for its “exemplary work and dedication assisting North Carolina facilities” as part of a Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Project conducted by the Air Quality Division of the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

A total of 77 assessments were conducted at manufacturing and institutional facilities throughout North Carolina in an EPA funded grant project started in 2012.  The project included 51 facility-wide assessments and 26 equipment specific assessments.  The WRP program assisted 25 of these facility-wide assessments. Forty-five of these facilities are subject to the Boiler GACT rule.

The assessments resulted in more than 500 individual recommendations.  The NC DAQ and its partners, including NCSU Energy Solution and Waste Reduction Partners, placed the recommendations into three major categories - electricity, boilers and measures that involve multiple energy sources.  Follow-up studies showed that 55 percent of the facility assisted implemented energy efficiency strategies.  The average annual cost saving value identified per facility was $100,000.  The project has identified 41,000 tons of CO2e of emission reduction potential with 17,000 tons already achieved through the facilities’ implementation efforts as of June 2015.
